CHAPTER 4

A Planted Plan

An hour later, Harley stood atop the busted old Ferris wheel. From there, she had a perfect view of the fun house through the glass dome in its roof.

The Joker sat in a silly purple and green throne on a stage in the middle of the emptied-out fun house. Some of his henchmen lounged around lazily or played billiards with each other.

Harley could also see all the open space around the fun house, where other henchmen patrolled twenty-four hours a day.

The wind shook the metal pod she stood on. Its old joints creaked, and she was glad for the perfect balance of a former gymnastics champion.

“I count ten goons on the outside, surrounding the building,” Harley said to herself, “and three on the roof. If I go in through the domed window, I’ll have a much easier time.”

She crouched down and pulled out a pair of binoculars. “Looks like Charlie, Leo, and Stan on the roof,” she said. “Charlie’s a pushover. Leo’s about as bright as a lump of coal. And Stan is too afraid of me to try anything. I’ll get past them, no problem.”

Harley looked beyond them, through the domed window on the roof. She could see the big metal cage with her hyenas against the wall at the back end of the fun house.

“And there are my poor babies,” Harley said, almost crying. “Don’t you boys worry. Mama’s coming to getcha.” She scanned the interior for more henchmen. “Three, four, five… ,” she counted out loud. “And probably at least a dozen more I can’t see.”

Harley took a deep breath and stashed her binoculars. “All right, time to do this,” she said, steeling herself.

SWISH! WHOOSH! FWOOSH!

Gracefully, Harley swung down the Ferris wheel from pod to pod. In moments, she landed with a gentle THUD on the rooftop right next to Charlie.
